Book
celebrates and honors life and death
This
book was inspired by Larisa Caldwell, a nineteen-year-old woman
from Eugene, Oregon, who died of cancer in 1997. Its title, Continuation,
is taken from a Chinese Tao character which Caldwell and fifty-four
others had tattooed on their bodies as an expression of the continuum
of life and death.
Book
reviews
"Continuation
confronts issues of death and dying through 30 powerful photos of
people who write innocently yet forcefully about their spiritual
beliefs. Embracing the mysterious, [Continuation] takes a
creative approach to one of society's most taboo subjects. Read
it to learn how death can bring beauty into your life."

"The
subject of the book is one that could have been maudlin or strange
or opportunistic. But instead this Northwest book is an unlikely
triumph, a self-published volume that keeps winning national awards
for its powerful message and artistry. The brief essays by the subjects
are honest, serious, even profound."

"The
thirty-seven photographs and accompanying personal texts presented
in this extraordinary collection represent a diverse group of women
and men, whose ages range from 18 to 64. They say what it means
to take part in the ritual observance of a unity that transcends
the physical fact of death. Many of us are more emotional, depressed
or anxious since September 11. The shared words and images in
Continuation offer solace to our collective grief and fear."
